Standing Up vs Sitting
Research has proven that sitting down for long periods of time can cause a number of health issues, including obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Over time, it can also lead to decreased productivity and creativity. However, having standing desks for work or school may be the solution. Standing throughout the day can help burn more calories, increase focus and attention, as well improve cognitive functioning. New research from the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health indicates standing can even boost productivity.
Study Results
The researchers at Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health measured the productivity differences between two groups of employees over a six month period. They found that the employees with stand capable workstations were about 46 percent more productive than those with traditional, seated desk. The employees with stand capable desks also reported reduced discomfort and back pain after the 6th month study, which researches believed played a role in the increased productivity. The study conclusion was that giving employees the ability to stand at work is not only good for a company’s bottom line, but also for their employees’ health.
