How to Stay Safe When Running Outdoors

The Benefits of Running

Running is a great way to exercise because it benefits your body beyond just the extensive leg workout. Running lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease, aids in maintaining a healthy body weight, reduces stress and anxiety, as well as gives you a mood and confidence boost. Whether you prefer running on a treadmill, the track or on a trail, all require a degree of planning and preparation. However, with the cooler temperatures and fewer hours of sunlight, outdoor runners need to take extra precautions to stay safe during their runs.

Outdoor Running Safety

Stay aware of your surroundings: Running provides a relaxing mental break, however, it is important to pay attention to your surroundings. Cars may not always see you, so be sure to look both ways before crossing a street. If there is not a sidewalk, run against traffic so you can see oncoming cars and have time to move if necessary.

Wear a reflective belt: If you run at dusk, dawn or night, never wear all black clothing. Instead wear bright clothing or a reflective belt to ensure cars can see you.

Consider a self-defense class: Many people refer to run alone, which is why it is a good idea to have some self-defense training. Although, the risk of an attack while running is extremely low, having the knowledge to protect yourself will help you feel more relaxed and confident while running.

Avoid loud music: Run with your music on low volume. This will help prevent an accident by allowing you to hear passing cyclists, car horns and sirens.

Always bring your phone: Although most people use their phone for music, it is still important to note to always have your phone easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Take care of your body: Make sure to start slow and allow your muscles to warm-up, especially in cooler weather. Also, take the time to stretch after your workout, incorporate rest days and stay hydrated!
